“Anger dwells only in the bosom of fools.” – Albert Einstein (Physicist)
“Any man who wants to be president is either an egomaniac or crazy” – Dwight D. Eisenhower (US Army 5-star General, American President)
“A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” – William Shakespeare (English Playwright)
I don’t get what’s with all the hype about using these quotes from famous people. Just because they come from some great person and they sound interesting doesn’t make these quotes unconceivable by anybody “lesser” to them, right? I’m pretty sure that there are dozens of ordinary people around us who have said something similar in nature before. Unfortunately, the only reason why what you say doesn’t matter is because you are a “nobody” to begin with, and your opinions and thoughts don’t matter to the outside world.
It’s pretty sad, but I don’t believe that what you say doesn’t matter.
Video Games – An unlimited supply of Inspiration
I love playing video games. It feels like as if you’re brought into a movie and you get to participate in it real-time. It takes you places beyond your imagination, and enables you to do things that you can’t do in real life.
But more importantly, it is the source of inspiration for many of the quotes that I still remember till this day.
I see loads of people use quotes from the above-mentioned people (Einstein, Shakespeare, etc.) and more, but never have I see someone try something new, something different. Games provide that alternate perspective, and it seems to be that the quotes that come out of it are no less inferior, and certainly no less meaningless than any of the above real-life quotes.
Here’s a couple of examples from me, just to get the ball rolling:
“He who stands with me shall be my brother.” – Blood Raven Captain Gabriel Angelos (Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War)
“An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded.” – Blood Raven Librarian Isador Akios (Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War)
“Knowledge is Power. Guard it Well.” – Blood Raven’s Librarium (Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War)
“Prayer cleanses the Soul. Pain cleanses the Body.” – Blood Raven’s Librarium (Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War)
“He who controls the past commands the future, He who commands the future, conquers the past.” – Kane (Command & Conquer, the Tiberium series)
“Though we strike at you from the shadows, do not think that we lack the courage to stand in the light” – Protoss Dark Templar Zeratul (Starcraft)
“When in doubt, empty your magazine” – Tychus Findlay (Starcraft)
“I’m about to drop the hammer… and dispense some indiscriminate justice.” – Terran Siege Tank in Siege Mode (Starcraft)
“The healthy human mind doesn’t wake up in the morning thinking this is its last day on Earth. But I think that’s a luxury. Not a curse. To know you’re close to the end is a kind of freedom. Good time to take…inventory. Out-gunned. Outnumbered. Out of our minds. On a suicide mission. But the sand and the rocks here, stained with thousands of years of warfare…They will remember us. For this. Because out of all our vast array of nightmares, this is the one we choose for ourselves. We go forward like a breath exhaled from the Earth. With vigor in our hearts and one goal in sight: We. Will. Kill him.” – Captain John Price (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
“History is written by the victor. History is filled with liars. If he lives, and we die, his truth becomes written – and ours is lost.” – Captain John Price (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
“… ‘Cause all you need to change the world is one good lie and a river of blood. He’s about to complete the greatest trick a liar ever played on history. His truth will be the truth. But only if he lives, and we die.“ – Captain John Price (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
“Be Polite. Be Efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.” – Sniper (Team Fortress 2)
“[on the phone] Dad? Dad I’m- … y- … Not a crazed gunman, Dad, I’m an assassin! Well, the difference being one’s a job, and the other’s mental sickness!” – Sniper (Team Fortress 2)
Of course, I could go on with more quotes based on the games on my shelf, but I think that I’ve made my point.
What is YOUR Quote?
People think it is narcissistic to quote yourself on something, but I choose to believe otherwise. Creating a quote or motto creates a simple, one-line statement which illustrates what you stand for, and it clearer for yourself and others to see what you believe in. For example:
“Trust is given Freely, Retracted if Betrayed, and Never given Twice”
The statement above summarizes my stand on trust. I believe everyone deserves to be given an opportunity to be trusted. But should he or she break that trust, it cannot be given again. This makes for simple mutual understanding: You want me to trust you? Fine, then don’t try to break it, or you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. And by the way, this statement is 100% original. I didn’t read anything up when I created this line for myself, which I still use in my email signatures till this day.
“Be yourself, man, be proud of you who are. Even if it sounds corny, don’t ever let no one tell you you ain’t beautiful.” (by Eminem, in his song “Beautiful”). Stop living in the shadows of somebody else.
